About Jake

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Housetrained: Yes
Jake is an approximately 2-3 year old Catahoula mix. He has been neutered and started on vaccinations. Jake is the only dog in an all cat rescue! Here is Jake's story: His story is sad and all too typical for rescued animals. When his owner died Jake was turned over the Putnam County Animal Control (which has a very high kill rate). With the concerted effort of three different rescue agencies, Jake was removed from Putnam County and transported to Oviedo where he now lives. When he came to me, he was scared to death and would not move from a belly up, submissive position...I even had to lift him into my van in this position! He was terrified! Once I returned home with him I immediately bathed him and I believe it was the first bath he had ever had! He had the largest fleas on him that I have ever seen on a dog. Amazingly, he was very healthy. Unfortunately for Jake, he is heartworm positive and will need to undergo heartworm treatment before he will be able to go to his new home. He is a wonderfully, sweet, boy. He loves people but tends to be shy at first. Everyone who meets him loves him and tells me what a great dog is he. Since he is currently living in a cat rescue, I have had ample opportunity to test him with cats! As is typical for a catahoula, he chases the cats. Although he has not shown any true aggression towards the cats, I would prefer he be placed in a home without cats. He gets along well with my other dogs and likes to romp and play with them. If you are interested in Jake, please email me. He will begin heartworm treatment at the beginning of February so he will not be available to go his new home until sometime towards the end of March. UPDATE Feb 7, 2006: Jake had his first heartworm treatment several days ago. He is very sore and tender. I can tell just by looking at him that he feels terrible. He is on pain medications to help with the back pain (from the injected heartworm medication). Although it is very obvious that he is in pain, he amazes me with his gentle nature and willingness. He craves attention and falls asleep with his head in my lap when I sit on the floor with him.
